Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier, a retail chain born of the collaboration between a tattoo artist and a fashion trendsetter, will open its first New Jersey store today at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus.

The 1,700-square-foot store is a leasing coup for the mall, which has been focusing in recent years on attracting what the shopping center describes as “fashion forward” retailers not found in competing malls. The Ed Hardy brand sells what could be called “luxury casual wear,” with T-shirts that sell for $80 to $175 and $300 hoodies.

The Plaza won out over The Mall at Short Hills for the chain’s first New Jersey location because the Paramus mall had “a bigger mix of stores,” according to Philip del Rio, director of stores for Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier.

They also wanted the more economically and culturally diverse clientele of the Plaza.

“We’re perceived luxury,” del Rio said. “We’re not Gucci. We’re not Louis Vuitton. We don’t pretend to be. We’re looking for that customer that wants to spend a little bit more but wants something trendy — isn’t just looking for something high end.”

The Plaza, he said, also is “a little bit more of an international destination” than Short Hills and also “has more of an urban flair, and that’s what we do well.”

The Plaza store is the chain’s 24th store in the United States. The Culver City, Calif.-based company also is planning to open an outlet store at the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets center in Tinton Falls in July.

Ed Hardy clothing is based on the tattoo designs of Don Ed Hardy, a California-based tattoo artist who creates designs with rock-and-roll, surfing and hot rodding themes. The Ed Hardy stores are part of the fashion empire of Christian Audigier, a fashion and licensing guru who has created nine clothing and accessories brands and holds 60 licenses for products ranging from jewelry, skateboards and vodka to air fresheners. He also has lent his name and design sense to “Christian Audigier: The Nightclub” at the Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas.

Audigier, 50, became a fashion phenomenon about a decade ago when he built sales for the Von Dutch clothing brand by creating a fashion trend for trucker hats — peaked-brimmed, mesh-backed caps — after celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher were seen wearing Von Dutch caps.

He’s also used celebrity fans such as Madonna to propel sales of Ed Hardy merchandise. Britney Spears and Kanye West have been spotted wearing the tattoo T-shirts.

Audigier debuted the Ed Hardy brand as a wholesale business in 2004 and opened the first Ed Hardy retail store in 2007. The company has enjoyed rapid growth, opening 24 stores in less than two years, with another five store openings planned by the end of this year. According to figures from the privately held company, sales grew to over $80 million in 2007 from $10 million two years earlier.

The Plaza store will have both the Ed Hardy and Christian Audigier names on the storefront, as the company switches to a new store concept that embraces several of its fashion brands, del Rio said.
